There was a mom I read about in a social media group who said that she would rather her children keep to themselves than for them to play with the wrong kind of kids. It was pointed out that she keeps company mostly with those who attend the TLM (traditional Latin Mass.) The divisive, elitist tone struck me and made me truly sad and little angry.
This has been on my mind. I have been praying about it and this morning in my devotion I read this: "...look outward. Be careful not to associate only with those who are already close to you or who share your values. You won’t know how to relate to other people when God puts them in your path."
I am definitely guilty of this on occasion. It's easy to associate with those who will understand our "language"...Holy Mass, veils, adoration, TLM, BVM, MPH, ETC.
But, how does that help anyone outside of our "circle" come to know or love our God and our Church? We were not made to hide our light under a bushel basket, or to only share it with those we deem worthy. We have been granted love and mercy so that we can show that to others. It is our mission to make disciples throughout ALL nations. Challenge yourselves to step outside of what brings you comfort. Better yet, challenge your "circle" to reach out to the periphery and make that circle bigger. Boldly look for those who need someone and be that someone.
We are children of God.
We are not called to divide and hide.
Our discipleship should be
intentional, genuine, and welcoming.
We are tasked to survey, discover, serve, and love.
